This volume includes a novella, ‘Descent from the Cross’ and many pieces of non-fiction which were discovered during research for Charlotte Peacock’s biography of Nan Shepherd, Into The Mountain, and later included in the collection Wild Geese. These range from her lyrical nature writings describing the landscape surrounding the River Dee, to portraits of the many characters she came across in everyday life. The collection contains all the verses which are known to exist. This includes the poems in Nan’s only volume of poetry, In the Cairngorms (1934), and in addition, 12 poems which were recently discovered. Illustrations are by Ian Munro and were used in the first
edition of Nan’s most famous and most loved work, The Living Mountain which was published in 1977.
