George Mackay Brown was born in Stromness, Orkney, in 1921. He died there in 1996.
He left behind him a body of highly original work: novels, short stories, poetry, journalism and even two operatic collaborations with Peter Maxwell Davis. He is now seen as the one of the foremost British poets of the twentieth century.
